The truth be that we were trying to get accepted into the famous Garlic Festival in California and so I did a garlic design to increase our chances of getting into the show with our tiles. I couldn’t find a suitable picture of a garlic clove so I used one fresh one right out of my kitchen and it is amazing all the nuances of color that I found on that one little clove. The snow capped mountains, the intense blue skyline, the overriding tan and sandy desert tones and then there is a hill of bright green from the Spring rains. The annual show of desert wildflowers cover the landscape. These red poppies are moving faintly in the warm spring winds.

Doesn’t everyone have some of these little orange beauties fluttering around their gardens in the summertime? I discovered they fly southward from Canada down to California taking advantage of the “thermal “warm air currents that help transport them down here in only 3 days. They follow their source of food the milkweed plants where they also lay their eggs. In Spring they migrate back up North again – the only insects to make both a North and South migration. I enjoy the varied colors and markings on their wings and their overall graceful and delicate design.

Living in Arizona for over a decade we used to travel to Santa Fe New, Mexico during Fall – the harvest season for their magnificent red chili peppers. They have five foot long “ristras” of these large red chili pods hanging down under their adobe- arched doorways. Swallowtail Butterfly - Hand Painted Art Tile

What I learned about Swallowtails is that they love my Butterfly Bushes I have in my garden. Also known as Buddleia bushes, they grow like a weed and have beautiful lavender colored bottle-brush like blooms. So of course I put my Swallowtail Butterfly atop a lavender Butterfly Bush in bloom.

I think that leaves are intricately beautiful with all their delicate webbing and lovely colors. We have a small Maple Tree in front of our shop and I looked at it closely and saw the bean-like seed pods hanging from it which I had really never noticed before. After many color schemes I was able to portray the multi layers of colors that exist simultaneously on one leaf when it begins to “turn” multi-color in the Fall. The Japanese characters on the tile say “Japanese Maple” as these trees are very much revered in Japan.
